Many companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to read resumes before a person ever sees them. If the system cannot parse your layout, your experience can be scrambled or missed entirely.
An ATS checker for your resume can give you a quick score, but a score cannot tell you why a section is failing or how to fix it for the job you want. In your free review I check your resume for ATS problems by hand and tell you exactly what to change.

This is a quick self-check, not an automated scan. For a real person's feedback on your actual file, send it in with the form above.
Everything you need to know about ATS resume checks: how applicant tracking systems read your resume, how to check it yourself, and when to ask a person to look at it.
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to collect, store and sort job applications. When you apply through a company website or job board, your resume is usually loaded into one of these systems before a recruiter ever opens it.
The system first parses your file. It pulls out your name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, education and skills, and files each one into a field. Recruiters then search and filter those fields, often by keywords, job titles and dates. If parsing goes wrong, the details a recruiter is searching for can land in the wrong field or go missing altogether.
Usually not on its own. In most systems a recruiter or hiring manager still makes the decision, but the system shapes what they see: how candidates are sorted, which ones come up in a search, and any screening questions the employer has set, such as work authorization or required licenses. How much filtering happens depends on how each employer has configured its system. That is why a good ATS check for your resume is about being readable and findable, not about tricking a robot.
No. Employers do not see a standard "ATS score", and different systems parse files differently. The scores you get from online ATS checkers are each tool's own estimate. They can point out real problems, but a high score does not guarantee your resume will be read correctly everywhere, and it says nothing about whether the content will persuade a person.
Both have a place. A quick automated scan is useful for catching obvious problems. A person can tell you what to do about them and what the scan cannot see.
| Automated ATS checker | Free review from Kyla | |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting problems | Flags common issues quickly | Finds the problems in your file and explains how to fix each one |
| Keywords | Compares your text with a job description you paste in | Checks keywords against your target role and whether they read naturally |
| Why a section fails | Often a generic message | A specific explanation for your resume |
| Impact and results | Rarely assessed | Reviewed: where duties can become achievements |
| Your situation | Cannot account for a career change, a gap or your seniority | Included in the advice |
| Speed | Instant | Within 2 business days |
| Cost | Many tools show a partial result free and charge for the full report | Free |
My advice is simple: run a scan if you like, then have a person look at your resume.
There is no single best ATS checker for every resume, because every system parses files a little differently. Whichever tool you try, these are the things worth looking for:
A score is a guide, not a verdict. Use the issues a checker finds as a to-do list, and do not chase a perfect number at the expense of clear, honest writing.
A resume that reads well for an ATS also tends to read well for people. These are the choices that matter most.
You can run a useful resume check for ATS in about ten minutes, without any software.
You can also try the 2-minute ATS self-check above.
Keywords are the skills, tools, job titles and qualifications an employer is looking for, and the best place to find them is the job posting itself. Use the posting's wording where it truly describes your experience, and put each keyword in context, inside a bullet that shows what you did. A list of keywords with no evidence behind it helps neither the system nor the reader.
| The posting says | Weak resume line | Stronger line (example) |
|---|---|---|
| Manage cross-functional projects | Responsible for projects | Led six cross-functional projects across sales, product and finance, delivered on time and under budget |
| Salesforce CRM | Used a CRM | Managed a 140-account pipeline in Salesforce CRM and improved forecast accuracy |
| Stakeholder communication | Good communicator | Presented monthly results to senior stakeholders and agreed priorities for the quarter |
Two rules: never add a skill you do not have, and use both the full term and the abbreviation once, such as "Certified Public Accountant (CPA)", because different recruiters search for different versions.
In the United States and Canada the document is called a resume. In the UK, Europe, the Middle East, India, Australia and other places, many people call it a CV. For most job seekers they are the same document. In some regions, and for academic or research roles, a CV can be longer and include publications and other detail.
I review both. Tell me the role you are aiming for in the form, and the country if it is outside the US, and I will review your document against that.

It is better described as an ATS check done by a person. I look at the formatting and wording problems that stop applicant tracking systems reading a resume correctly, and I explain how to fix them. It is not an automated scanner that gives you a score.
Follow the six-step check in the guide above: do a copy-and-paste test, check your file type and layout, compare your wording with the job posting, check your headings and contact details, and run a scan if you like. You can also send your resume in for a free review and I will check it for ATS problems myself.
There is no single best ATS checker for every resume, because each system parses files differently. Look for a tool that shows how your resume was parsed, explains each problem, compares your resume with a specific job posting, is clear about cost and explains how your data is used. Then have a person review the result.
There is no universal ATS score. Employers do not see a standard score, and each online checker calculates its own. Treat a score as a guide, fix the specific issues it finds, and do not chase a perfect number.
Not usually on their own. In most systems a recruiter or hiring manager still makes the decision, but the system affects how candidates are sorted and found, and employers can set screening questions. A resume that the system cannot read properly can be hard to find, which is why format and keywords matter.
Both usually work. A text-based PDF or a DOCX file is fine for most systems. If the job posting says which to use, follow it. Avoid scanned or image-only PDFs, because a system cannot read the text in them.
Some systems struggle with them. To be safe, use a single-column layout, avoid tables and text boxes, and put your name and contact details in the main body of the page rather than only in the header or footer.
There is no magic number. Use the skills, tools and job titles from the posting wherever they truly describe your experience, and write them into bullets that show what you did. Never add a skill you do not have.
For most professionals, one to two pages. Early-career candidates usually fit on one page. Senior professionals may need two. Quality and relevance matter more than length.
