Why Your Resume Bullets Matter

Recruiters spend 6-7 seconds scanning a resume before deciding if they’ll keep reading. That means your bullet points need to pack a punch.

The best way to do this? Use the CAR method.

CAR stands for:

  • Challenge – What problem or responsibility did you take on?
  • Action – What did you do to address it?
  • Result – What was the measurable impact?

This simple formula turns generic job descriptions into compelling achievements that show your value to an employer.

How to Use the CAR Method for Your Resume

Step 1: Identify the Challenge

Think about a problem you solved, a goal you achieved, or a responsibility you had.

Example:

  • Original: Helped manage social media accounts.
  • Challenge: The company had low engagement and needed a better content strategy.

Step 2: Describe Your Action

What did you specifically do to address the challenge? Use action verbs to show initiative.

Example:

  • Original: Helped manage social media accounts.
  • Action: Developed and executed a new content calendar based on audience insights.

Step 3: Show the Result

What impact did your actions have? Use numbers whenever possible.

Example:

  • Original: Helped manage social media accounts.
  • Result: Increased engagement by 50% and follower count by 2,000 in three months.

Final Resume Bullet (CAR Format)

“Revamped content strategy and created a new social media calendar, increasing engagement by 50% and growing followers by 2,000 in three months.”
