When Your Internship Search Feels Like Mt. Everest: How to Stay Motivated (Post 9 of 10 in my Student Series)

When Your Internship Search Feels Like Mt. Everest

*Many of my clients have kids in high school/college. This series of posts detailing the key points of an effective early career job/internship search is for them! If your child needs a resume, reach out. I offer discounted student rates.

Why Job Searching Can Feel Overwhelming

You start your internship search feeling optimistic. You polish your resume, send out applications, and refresh your inbox obsessively, expecting responses. But weeks go by, and all you get is… silence.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Searching for a job or internship can feel like climbing Mt. Everest—a grueling, uphill battle with no clear finish line.

The good news? People reach the summit every day. And you can, too.

Here’s how to stay motivated and keep moving forward—even when your job search feels endless.

Step 1: Set Realistic, Achievable Goals

Instead of saying, “I need an internship ASAP,” break your search into small, manageable tasks.

Example Weekly Goals:

  • Apply to 5 internships that genuinely interest you.
  • Reach out to 3 professionals on LinkedIn.
  • Attend 1 virtual or in-person networking event.
  • Learn a new skill relevant to your industry.

Every application, message, or event gets you one step closer to the summit.

Avoid: Applying to dozens of random internships without customizing your applications. Quality beats quantity!

Step 2: Build a Routine & Stay Consistent

Think of your job search as a part-time job—it requires consistency and effort.

Example Schedule:

  • Monday: Research new internship opportunities.
  • Tuesday: Customize & send applications.
  • Wednesday: Follow up on previous applications.
  • Thursday: Engage on LinkedIn (comment on posts, message recruiters).
  • Friday: Improve your skills (online courses, personal projects).

Treating your search like a structured process prevents burnout and keeps you moving forward.

Step 3: Network (Even If You Hate Networking)

Most jobs and internships aren’t even posted online—they come from connections.

How to network effectively:

  • Engage on LinkedIn (commenting is a great way to get noticed).
  • Ask for informational interviews (15-minute chats with professionals in your field).
  • Join student groups & industry events to meet new people.

🔹 Example Message to a LinkedIn Connection: “Hi [Name], I’m a [Your Major] student interested in [Industry]. I’d love to hear about your career path and any advice you have. Would you be open to a quick chat?”

People love to share their experiences—you just have to ask!

Step 4: Upskill & Stay Productive

If you’re facing rejection or silence, use this time to improve yourself.

Ways to boost your resume:

  • Take free courses on Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or Google Certifications.
  • Start a small project related to your field (a blog, coding project, or case study).
  • Volunteer or freelance to gain real-world experience.

Even if you don’t land an internship right away, you’ll be more prepared for the next opportunity.

Step 5: Celebrate Small Wins & Stay Positive

The internship search is tough, but every step forward is progress.

Celebrate wins like:

  • A recruiter viewed your LinkedIn profile.
  • You got a response (even if it’s a rejection—it means you’re getting noticed!).
  • You completed an application that took effort.
  • You learned a new skill that makes you more employable.

Stay persistent, adaptable, and optimistic. The right opportunity will come—just keep climbing. 🏔️

Final Thoughts: Keep Going!

Job searching is a marathon, not a sprint. If it feels like Mt. Everest, remember: every rejection, every application, and every networking effort is one step closer to success.

🚀 Take action today:

🔹 Set realistic goals.

🔹 Stick to a job search routine.

🔹 Network, even if it feels uncomfortable.

🔹 Keep learning and upskilling.

🔹 Celebrate small wins along the way. Need help with your resume, LinkedIn, or job search strategy? Let’s chat!
