The Pizza Rule: How to Make Your Resume Irresistible to Robots AND Humans (Post 1 of 10 for Students!)

*Many of my clients have kids in high school/college. This series of posts detailing the key points of an effective early career job/internship search is for them! If your child needs a resume, reach out. I offer discounted student rates.

Why Your Resume is Like Pizza 🍕

Imagine walking into a pizza shop where three brothers each sell a different kind of pizza:

  • The first brother, Manny, sells plain cheese.
  • The second brother, Mario, makes the exact pizza you love.
  • The third brother, Horatio, makes a pizza you mostly like… but with that one topping you hate.

Which one do you choose? Mario’s, of course! Because it’s tailored to your taste.

Now, think about your resume. Hiring managers and applicant tracking systems (ATS) are looking for the perfect “pizza”—a resume that matches exactly what they need. If your resume is too generic (like plain cheese) or contains irrelevant details (like that unwanted topping), it won’t stand out.

Let’s break down how to tailor your resume content to make sure it’s exactly what hiring managers and ATS are looking for.

How to Tailor Your Resume Like the Perfect Pizza

1️⃣ Use Keywords from the Job Description 🍕

Just like adding the right toppings makes a pizza better, using keywords from the job listing makes your resume more appealing. If the job posting asks for “data analysis” and “Excel proficiency,” be sure those exact phrases appear in your resume.

2️⃣ Start with a Strong Summary 🍕

Instead of a bland “Objective Statement” (which hiring managers already assume), use a compelling summary that quickly answers, “Why would we LOVE to work with you?”

✅ Example: “Detail-oriented growth marketer with experience in social media strategy and content creation. Increased engagement by 40% for a university club’s Instagram page.”

3️⃣ Write Strong, Results-Driven Bullet Points 🍕

Each experience should showcase what you did and the impact you had.

✅ Good Example:

  • Developed a social media strategy that increased engagement by 40% by creating and consistently deploying audience-targeted content.
  • Led a team of 5 students to create marketing materials for a campus event that attracted 300+ attendees.

❌ Bad Example:

  • Worked on social media posts.
  • Helped plan events.

4️⃣ Keep It Clean & Concise 🍕

Recruiters skim resumes in under 10 seconds—so make sure yours is easy to scan!

  • 1 page is best for students and recent grads with limited content.
  • Use consistent spacing and bullet points to keep things readable.
  • Don’t include unnecessary fluff (e.g., “References available upon request”).
  •

What if the Job Description is Vague?

Internship job descriptions are notoriously poorly written. I get it! But this shouldn’t stop you from taking a stab at aligning your resume with the recruiter’s needs.

✅ Lean on ChatGPT for help: Put this prompt into ChatGPT: “Write a job description for (Company Name) seeking (Internship Title). Here’s what they provided on the website. Take an educated guess of what they’re looking for in this role.”

Showcase your skills on your resume that align with the job description ChatGPT generates for you!

Final Thought: The Goal Is to Get a Bite!

Think of your resume as the appetizer to your career. The goal is to get the recruiter interested enough to take the next bite—which is your interview.

By choosing the right content and tailoring your resume to match the job description, you’ll craft a resume that’s irresistible to both ATS and hiring managers.
