Executive Interview Coach: How Senior Leaders Prepare for High-Stakes Interviews

Executive interview coach guide to preparing for senior leadership interviews

Rachel (a composite of several senior clients) had run a $200M business unit for six years. She’d hired dozens of leaders herself. Yet three rounds into a COO search, she found herself rambling through an answer about her leadership philosophy to a board member who clearly wanted something sharper. “I know how to do this job,” she told me afterward. “I just don’t know how to talk about it in a room like that.”

That’s exactly what an executive interview coach helps with. Senior leaders prepare for high-stakes interviews by building a clear leadership narrative, preparing proof for strategy and judgment questions, anticipating each stakeholder’s concerns, and rehearsing for the format, from panels to board conversations to presentations.

A definition: in executive hiring, stakeholders are the different people who influence the decision, such as the CEO, board members, peers, and sometimes direct reports, each with their own priorities.

Step 1: Build Your Leadership Narrative

Executives need a two-minute story that explains who they are as a leader, what problems they solve, and why this role is the logical next chapter. It’s the backbone of every answer. My executive resume examples show how the same narrative shows up on paper.

Step 2: Prepare Proof for Strategy and Judgment

Expect questions like “Tell me about a strategic bet that didn’t work” or “How did you handle a conflict with a peer executive?” Prepare specific stories with context, decisions, trade-offs, and results. This is where preparing proof instead of answers matters most.

Step 3: Map Each Stakeholder’s Concerns

Stakeholder What they often care about How to prepare
CEO Partnership, execution, trust Examples of driving results with a leader
Board members Judgment, risk, governance Stories about decisions under uncertainty
Peers Collaboration and fit Cross-functional wins and conflict resolution
Direct reports Leadership style and development How you build and grow teams

Step 4: Prepare for the Format

Executive processes may include panels, presentations, case discussions, or 30-60-90 day plans. Each needs its own preparation. Some candidates also face recorded screens; here’s my HireVue interview guide.

If you’re in the middle of a senior search and the stakes feel high, a few focused sessions can make a real difference in how you show up. Feel free to book a free consultation to talk through where you are in the process.

Step 5: Rehearse With Feedback

Practice out loud, ideally with someone who’ll push back. The goal is clarity and composure, not memorization. The right interview mindset helps here: you’re there to evaluate fit too.

Step 6: Prepare for the Offer

Executive offers often involve complex compensation. Prepare before the call; my post on negotiating salary without making it weird is a good start.

For context on executive roles, the BLS entry on top executives is a useful overview. Harvard Business Review’s career planning articles offer great leadership-career perspective, and SHRM’s recruiting resources show how organizations structure senior hiring.

How I Work With Executives

My interview coaching is $125 per session (see rates). Many executives pair it with an executive-level resume or an executive bio. If you’re weighing how much support you need, see when to prep alone vs. hire a coach.

Questions I Get Asked a Lot

An executive interview coach helps senior leaders shape their leadership narrative, prepare strategic and behavioral answers, anticipate stakeholder concerns, and practice for multi-round processes, including board and panel interviews.

How are executive interviews different?

They focus more on strategy, judgment, leadership style, and cultural fit, and they often involve multiple stakeholders, longer processes, and presentations or case discussions.

It depends on the process. Many executives want support across several rounds, from early conversations through final presentations and negotiation.

How much does executive interview coaching cost?

Industry pricing varies. My interview coaching is $125 per session, and many executives combine it with resume or bio work.

The short version

  • Build a clear leadership narrative first.
  • Prepare proof for strategy and judgment questions.
  • Tailor your preparation to each stakeholder and format.
  • Rehearse with honest feedback, and prepare for the offer.
