Teacher Career Coach Advice: Best Jobs for Former Teachers + Resume Tips

Teacher career coach guide to best jobs for former teachers and resume tips

My opinion, after working with many educators: teachers are some of the most underrated professionals in the job market. You manage 30 stakeholders at once, design and deliver training daily, track data, handle conflict, and communicate with parents, administrators, and kids, often before lunch. The problem isn’t your skills. It’s that your resume speaks “school,” and hiring managers in other fields don’t.

That’s where a teacher career coach helps. The best jobs for former teachers are the ones that use what you already do (designing learning, explaining complex ideas, managing people and data) in a new setting, and the key to getting hired is translating your classroom experience into the language of that setting.

What Jobs Are Best for Former Teachers?

Quick answer: Instructional design, corporate training and enablement, customer success, education technology, curriculum development, program management, recruiting, and nonprofit program roles are common, strong fits for former teachers.

Role Why teachers fit What to show
Instructional designer You design learning every day Programs built and outcomes measured
Corporate trainer / enablement You deliver training to tough audiences Workshops led and engagement results
Customer success You build relationships and solve problems Communication and retention-style results
EdTech roles You know the user Tool adoption and classroom tech leadership
Curriculum developer You write and adapt curriculum Units created and standards aligned
Program manager You manage complex calendars and people Events, programs, and coordination
Recruiter / talent You read people and communicate well Interviewing, mentoring, and hiring support
Nonprofit program roles Mission-driven work you already know Community and family engagement

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a great way to research these roles, their typical training, and how they’re described.

How Do Teaching Skills Translate?

  • “Lesson planning” becomes designing learning programs.
  • “Classroom management” becomes leading groups and managing behavior and engagement.
  • “Parent conferences” becomes stakeholder communication.
  • “Grading and assessment” becomes measuring outcomes and using data.

Thinking through which of these roles fits you best, and feeling a little overwhelmed? Most teachers I talk to start right there. A free resume review is an easy first step: I’ll tell you which strengths jump off your resume and which ones are buried.

How Do I Rewrite My Resume as a Teacher?

Lead with your target title and a bridge summary, then translate your bullets. My full guide is how to write a career change resume (it uses a teacher example), and the bigger strategy is in positioning yourself for a new field. Make sure your results come through; here’s how to write powerful bullets, and keep the format ATS-friendly.

How Do I Get Hired Without Industry Experience?

For context on hiring practices, SHRM’s recruiting resources help, and Harvard Business Review’s career planning articles are good reading for any career changer.

Should I Work With a Teacher Career Coach?

If you know you’re done with the classroom but aren’t sure what’s next, or you’ve applied to a few roles without traction, coaching can save you a lot of time. My career coaching starts with a 14-day “Find Your Path” challenge ($299) that takes about 15 minutes a day, which fits a teacher’s schedule. For your materials, my resume writing service is priced by career level (see rates).

Questions I Get Asked a Lot

What jobs can former teachers do?

Former teachers often move into instructional design, corporate training, customer success, education technology, program management, curriculum development, recruiting, and nonprofit roles.

How do teachers write a resume for a career change?

Lead with a target title and a bridge summary, then translate classroom work into business outcomes: programs designed, people trained, results measured, and stakeholders managed.

Do I need a certificate to leave teaching?

Not always. Some roles, like instructional design, can benefit from a short course or portfolio. Many others value your existing skills once they’re translated well.

Can a career coach help teachers change careers?

Yes. A coach helps you choose a direction, translate your skills, build a portfolio or projects if needed, and network into the new field.

When is the best time for a teacher to start a job search?

Start exploring early in the school year so you can build your materials and network without rushing. Many teachers aim for transitions over the summer.
